"U.S. total trade with Sub-Saharan Africa (exports plus imports) increased 28.0 per cent in 2008, as both exports and imports grew.
U.S. exports increased by 29.2 per cent to $18.5 billion, driven by growth in several sectors including: machinery, vehicles and parts, wheat, non-crude oil, aircraft, and electrical machinery (including telecommunications equipment). But imports in 2008 increased by 27.8 per cent to $86.1 billion. As has been the case throughout 2008, this growth continues to be due to a significant increase of 31.9 per cent in crude oil imports (accounting for 79.5 per cent of total imports from sub-Saharan Africa)..."
